Important Facts World Environment Day 2023
World Environment Day is the largest celebration of the world dedicated to nature by the United Nations.
In 1973, the United Nations organized the first environmental conference of countries around the world in Stockholm (Sweden) on the problem of environmental pollution. In this, 119 countries participated and for the first time accepted the principle of one earth.
In this conference, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) was born and it was decided to make citizens aware of the problem of pollution by organizing Environment Day on 5 June every year. And its main objective was to awaken political consciousness and inspire the general public by bringing awareness to the environment.
Environment Conference The then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi gave a lecture on the topic ‘The deteriorating state of the environment and its impact on the future of the world’.
This was India’s initial step towards environmental protection. Since then we have been celebrating World Environment Day every year on 5th June.
The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973 the first WED was held with the theme “Only One Earth”. More than 143 countries participate in it every year.
The Environment Protection Act came into Action on 19 November 1986. Water, air, land – the factors related to these three and humans, plants, micro-organisms, other living matter, etc. come under the environment.
Why is Environment Day celebrated?
When the problem of environmental pollution in the world started to take a formidable form and due to the unbalanced distribution of resources.
All the countries were affected badly, then a global platform was created to deal with these problems, the purpose of celebrating this day is to make the problems of the environment human.
