Move Aims to Prevent Exam Fraud, Fake Paper Leak Claims and Misinformation Before NEET Re-Examination
The Government of India has ordered a temporary restriction on Telegram ahead of the NEET UG 2026 re-examination. Following the order, Google has removed the Telegram app from the Google Play Store in India. Reports suggest that Apple may also take similar action on its App Store.
The government took the step to prevent the spread of fake paper leak claims, misinformation, and cheating networks that authorities believe were operating through Telegram channels and groups.
Why Has the Government Restricted Telegram?
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued the order based on recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA). The government said the restriction aims to maintain the integrity of the upcoming NEET UG 2026 re-examination and stop the misuse of digital platforms for exam-related fraud.
According to officials, several Telegram channels and groups allegedly circulated misleading claims about question paper leaks and attempted to deceive students by promising access to exam papers.
What Action Has Google Taken?
Google has already removed Telegram from the Google Play Store in India. As a result, new Android users cannot currently download the app through Google’s official app marketplace.
At the time of reporting, Telegram remained available on Apple’s App Store, although reports indicate that Apple may also implement the government’s order.
How Long Will the Telegram Restriction Remain in Effect?
The government has imposed the restriction until 22 June 2026. The temporary ban will remain in place during the NEET UG 2026 re-examination period and for a short period afterward.
Authorities issued the order under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which allows the government to restrict access to online platforms under specific circumstances.
Why Has the Government Disabled Telegram’s Message Editing Feature?
In a separate directive, the government has asked Telegram to disable its message editing feature in India until 30 June 2026.
Officials said some users allegedly misused the feature by editing old messages and attaching new files while keeping the original timestamp unchanged. According to authorities, such practices could create misleading evidence related to paper leak claims and exam fraud investigations.
What Has NTA Said About Paper Leak Claims?
The National Testing Agency has stated that no NEET UG 2026 question paper leak occurred. However, the agency said that certain Telegram channels, groups, and bots allegedly spread false information and attempted to exploit students by making fake claims about leaked papers.
NTA believes that removing individual channels or groups would not have been enough to address the issue. Therefore, authorities decided to take broader action during the examination period.
Which Agencies Are Involved in the Investigation?
NTA has acknowledged the support of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), state police forces, and several central government agencies in identifying and investigating networks linked to alleged exam-related fraud and misinformation.
Law enforcement agencies in multiple states have also launched investigations into suspected examination scams operating through social media and messaging platforms.
What Does This Mean for Students?
Students preparing for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination should rely only on official information released by NTA and government authorities. Officials have advised candidates not to trust claims related to leaked question papers or unauthorized exam material shared through social media platforms.
The government says the temporary restriction aims to ensure a fair examination process and protect students from misinformation and fraudulent activities during the examination period.
