History of Indian Air Force Day The Indian Air Force was established on 8 October 1932. The Indian Air Force was then raised as an auxiliary force of the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom. Since its inception on 8 October 1932, the Indian Air Force has played an important role in many important wars and historical operations.
Indian Air Force Name History
The Indian Air Force was then officially raised as an auxiliary air force of the British Empire, which was named the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF). The Indian Air Force honored India’s aviation service with the prefix Royal during World War II.
After the country’s independence in 1947, the Air Force was named Royal Indian Air Force. However, three years later in 1950, after India became a republic, it was named Indian Air Force(IAF). Since 1950, the Indian Air Force has fought four wars with Pakistan and one with China. Other major operations carried out by the Indian Air Force include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus, and Operation Poomalai. On the other hand, the mission of the Indian Air Force goes beyond engagement with hostile forces as it participates in UN peacekeeping missions.

- Operation Vijay in 1961 The Liberation of Goa from Portuguese.
- Operation Meghdoot in 1984 To capture the Siachen Glacier in Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan.
- Operation Poomalai in 1987 To Support Tamil Tigers during the Sri Lankan Civil War.
- Operation Cactus in 1988 Against the Maldives coup who want to overthrow the government in the island of Maldives.
Why Indian Air Force Day is celebrated on 8th October?
The Indian Air Force was established on 8 October 1932, and since then this day is celebrated as Air Force Day. Since then Indian Air Force Day is celebrated every year on 8 October. On this day a program is organized at Hindon Air Force Station in Ghaziabad. Many veterans including army officers are involved and powerful aircraft are displayed in the sky.
Indian Air Force Motto
All the armies in the country have their own motto. The motto of the Indian Air Force is ‘Nabh Sprush Deeptam’. The motto of the Indian Air Force is taken from the eleventh chapter of the Gita and is an excerpt from the sermon given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra during the Great War of Mahabharata.
