Swedish Geneticist Svante Pääbo Gets Nobel Prize In Physiology or Medicine
The Nobel Assembly, consisting of 50 professors at Karolinska Institutet, awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Nobel Committee evaluates the nominations. Since 1901 the Nobel Prize has been awarded to scientists who have made the most important discoveries for the benefit of humankind.
Who is Svante Pääbo: Swedish scientist Svante Pääbo has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology Medicine. Do you know for which historical work he has been honored?
The Nobel Prize is named after Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. He had discovered dynamite. These awards are given in the categories of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology, and Medicine, Economics, Literature, and Peace. The recipients of this award get an amount of 7.30 Crore (Indian Rupees) along with medals, and certificates.
Nobel Prize 2022 winner Svante Pääbo’s research on human evolution.
The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet has awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Svante Pääbo for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.
Swedish scientist Svante Pääbo received this award for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution. This was announced by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet. Svante Paabo discovered that gene transfer took place from the now extinct hominin to Homo sapiens.
The announcement of the Nobel Prizes has begun with the Nobel Prize in Medicine. According to Thomas Perlman, the prize for Physics was announced on October 4. The Nobel for Chemistry will be announced on 5 October and the Nobel for Literature on 6 October. While the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on 7 October and the Economics category award on 10 October.
Pääbo’s discoveries have provided important information on how the world was populated at the time when Homo sapiens migrated out of Africa and spread to the rest of the world. Neanderthals lived in the west and Denisovans in the east on the Eurasian continent. Interbreeding occurred when Homo sapiens spread across the continent, leaving traces that remain in our DNA.
In his research, Pabo found that there was a gene transfer from these now extinct hominins to Homo sapiens after migration from Africa about 70 thousand years ago. Svante Paabo is a Swedish geneticist specializing in the field of evolutionary genetics. He joined the University of Munich in 1990. At Professor K, he did research on ancient DNA.
Who is Svante Pääbo?
Svante Paabo is a resident of Stockholm, Sweden. His father Sune Bergström was also a biochemist and the special thing is that he also received the Nobel Prize (shared) in the year 1982. Pabo studied at Uppsala University in 1986. During his PhD, he did research on how the E19 protein of adenovirus controls the immune system.
Svante Pääbo was born 1955 in Stockholm, Sweden. He defended his PhD thesis in 1986 at Uppsala University and was a postdoctoral fellow at University of Zürich, Switzerland and later at University of California, Berkeley, USA. He became Professor at the University of Munich, Germany in 1990. In 1999 he founded the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany where he is still active. He also holds a position as adjunct Professor at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan.
