How did the celebration of IWD start on 8th March?

Women’s Day started with a movement. Actually, in the year 1908, there was a labour movement in America. Many women participated in this movement. This rally was taken out by 15 thousand women.

The demand of this rally was to give wages according to work, to reduce working hours and to get the right to vote. The International Socialist Women’s Conference was established in August 1910.

At the same time, Germany celebrated International Women’s Day for the first time on 8 March 1914. In 1975, the United Nations began marking International Women’s Day. After which in 1977, it was decided that this day would be celebrated every year on 8 March.

The Socialist Party of America declared this day as National Women’s Day a year after this incident. Similarly, in the year 1911, it was celebrated as International Women’s Day for the first time in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland.

Then in the year 1975, the United Nations started celebrating it annually with a special theme. Since then, Woman’s Day was officially recognized. It was decided by the United Nations in 1977 that this day would be celebrated every year on 8 March. Its first theme was ‘Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future’.
