Check Name Formatting Before Reusing a Class List

Before reusing a class or club list, compare any automatic name formatting with the original spelling. Making every entry look consistent can change a correct surname or acronym. Keep the original value available and review the displayed result before it reaches a certificate, credit list or shared handout.

Start with the entries that are likely to expose a problem: an internal capital, a hyphen, an acronym and an accidental leading space. Use invented examples while checking the rule. Do not put real student details into a public practice page.

Decide what the formula is allowed to change

In Notion, a formula property can display a formatted version beside the source value. This explanation of first-letter and each-word capitalization formulas shows why lowercasing the remaining letters can turn “McDonald” into “Mcdonald”. It also distinguishes a first-character change from formatting every word.

Choose the rule for the actual field. A sentence-style task title and a person’s chosen name do not need the same transformation. Preserve exceptions intentionally instead of treating every unusual capital as an error. A formula returning text is not evidence that the spelling is right.

Review the copy that will be used

Ask the person responsible for the list to check the output before it is reused. Confirm which field the export or handoff includes; a corrected display beside an original entry does not tell you which one another person will copy. Keep a way to return to the source if a change is disputed.

If the workspace needs a clearer distinction between input, formula output and approved wording, the formula and database topics at NotionSolutions for structured workspace tasks can help you arrange those fields. Keep the review small enough to finish. Correct spelling matters more than making every row obey a single visual pattern.
