Through the columns of your renowned newspaper, I seek to express my concern about the rapidly increasing population of beggars which is causing a lot of inconvenience to the general public in the city.

It is strange that as the city is making more and more progress, the number of beggars are on the increase. It is probable that due to the prosperity of the people their generosity level is rising, thus encouraging begging as a profitable occupation.

Begging has therefore transformed into a flourishing racket. From the confident manner in which beggars go about their business, it is clear that they have the support of the authorities. Whatever the cause and in whatever way it is practised, it is the ordinary citizen on the street, in public places, or in homes who suffer its ill effects. Not only do the beggars keep harassing the people who try to ignore them, but these people, also become a target of their abuses and curses when the demand of these beggars is not fulfilled. Begging is also tarnishing the image of our cities and keeps tourists away.

Hence, it is time that the authorities took such measures as would discourage begging in the city. Charitable organisations or NGOs should be encouraged to help those among the poor who are genuinely in need.
