National Sports Day: National Sports Day is celebrated on 29th August every year. The purpose of celebrating it is to make people aware of the games and to promote sports Activities.

About National Sports Day

National Sports Day: Every year on August 29, ‘National Sports Day‘ is celebrated in the country. However, there is a special reason to celebrate it on August 29. It is the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand, who is called the Magician of Hockey. Dhyan Chand wrote his name in golden letters in the hockey world. In the memory of Dhyan Chand, National sports awards are given by the President on National Sports Day, including the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Dhyan Chand Award, and Dronacharya Award.

The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on August 29, the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. 

Why is Dhyan Chand’s birthday celebrated as National Sports Day?

Major Dhyan Chand was born on this day i.e. 29 August 1905 in the Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh in an ordinary Rajput family. His birthday is celebrated as the National Sports Day of India. Everyone is aware of the name of Major Dhyan Chand, who is known as the ‘Wizard of Hockey’, and how he took the country’s own sport hockey to great heights. He has been a legendary player on the Indian hockey team.

The birthday of Major Dhyan Chand, known as the wizard of hockey, was celebrated as ‘National Sports Day’ across the country today. The day is celebrated by organizing friendly matches between various hockey teams at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, which was built in honor and respect of Dhyan Chand. National Sports Day is celebrated since 1995.

National Sports Day’s Celebrations

Many schools across the country celebrate this day with their annual sports day and also encourage the younger generation and make them aware of the potential of sports along with the achievements made by the country. On this day, sportspersons who have excelled in the world of sports are honored with national Arjuna and Dronacharya awards. On this occasion, the players have got the motivation to move forward with hard work and perseverance.

Dhyan Chand had a Lot of Love for Hockey

Dhyan Chand joined the Indian Army at the age of 16. After this, he started playing hockey. It is being said that in those days, Dhyan Chand had a lot of love for hockey and he used to spend a lot of time on the field. After this, he started playing hockey for the Indian team. During the Olympic Games held in Amsterdam in 1928, he was the highest scorer for India. Dhyan Chand scored 14 goals in that tournament. During this time, he played many matches, in which he performed very well.

Interesting Stroy Between Dhyan Chand and Hitler 

In the year 1936, under the captaincy of Major Dhyan Chand, the Indian team arrived to participate in the Berlin Olympics. The Indian team was to face host Germany. In such a situation, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler also came to see the final. Dhyan Chand started scoring goals against Germany before Hitler. In such a situation, Hitler also changed Dhyan Chand’s stick.

India defeated Germany with a margin of 8-1. Hitler had already left the stadium before the end of the match as he could not tolerate the defeat of his country. But Hitler met Dhyan Chand and asked him to come to Germany but Major Dhyan Chand refused. after this incident, Hitler highly praised Dhyan Chand.

Major Dhyan Chand The Magician of Hockey

Let us tell you that he was really a magician of hockey. He made not only the German dictator Hitler but also the great cricketer Don Bradman his fan with his charismatic hockey. Everyone used to become a follower of Dhyan Chand after seeing his game. Dhyan Chand captained India in 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics. He won the gold medal for India all three times. Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest hockey players in the world, scored 400 goals in international hockey.
