Padma Awards: The goal of the Padma Awards is to honor people working in the field of public service, for which this award is given every year by the Padma Awards Committee selected by the Prime Minister.
Padma Awards is one of the highest civilian honors which is announced every year on the evening before Republic Day. The awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of a high order) and Padma Shri (distinguished service). The aim of the Padma Awards is to honor people who have worked in the field of public service.

Types of Padma Awards
This award is given every year by the Padma Awards Committee selected by the Prime Minister. The process of nomination is open to all and one can do their own nomination by coming here. The Padma Awards were instituted in the year 1954 and are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day. Only during the years 1978 and 1979 and 1993 to 1997 were not declared due to some interruptions.
The Awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher order) and Padma Shri (distinguished service).

- Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order; and
- Padma Shri for distinguished service.
To whom and why is this award given?
Padma awards are given in three categories, i.e. Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. While Padma Vibhushan is given for ordinary and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan is given for distinguished service of high order and Padma Shri is given for distinguished service. All individuals are eligible for these awards, regardless of caste, occupation, position or gender. However, these awards are not given to government employees working with PSUs except doctors and scientists.
The award seeks to recognize achievements in all fields of activities or disciplines where an element of public service is involved.
This award is usually not conferred posthumously. However, in special cases, the government may also consider awarding the award posthumously. The Padma Awards are presented by the President of India usually in the month of March/April every year, where the awardees are presented with a Sanad (Certificate) and a medal signed by the President.
A small replica of the medal is also given to the recipients which can be worn by the award winners during any function/state function etc. The names of the award winners are published in the Gazette of India on the day of the presentation ceremony. The total number of awards to be given in a year (excluding posthumous awards and NRIs/foreigners/OCIs) should not exceed 120. The prize does not amount to a title and cannot be used as a suffix or prefix to the names of the prize winners.

Padma Vibhushan is the second highest civilian award in India. It was also established in 1954 and at that time only 6 recipients were honored with this award. Padma Vibhushan was also known as Pehla Varga.

Padma Bhushan is India’s third highest civilian award. Before this comes the number of Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan. Twenty-three people were awarded the Padma Bhushan when it was established in 1954. Padma Bhushan was known as the second class.
