The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites are the important places of cultural or natural heritage as described in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in 1972.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.

There are 40 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS) in India that are recognised by UNESCO as of 2021. These Places are of cultural and natural importance as described in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, Established in 1972. At the 7th session, India’s Agra Fort and Ajanta was enlisted, in 1983, for the first time. The recent inclusion was that of two new sites –  Dholavira, Harappan City in the Rann of Kutchh Gujrat ,Rudreswara Temple (Ramappa Temple) at Palampet, Warangal, Telangana in July 2021.

UNESCO Tentative List of Heritage Sites 

Apart from the 40 sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, there is a list of tentative sites for recognition which has been submitted to the UNESCO Committee for evaluation and acceptance. This procedure of prelisting is a prerequisite for the nominations for the World Heritage List to be accepted.
