University Grants Commission Sounds Alarm on Fake Universities. Check State-Wise List of Fake Universities.

Educational News: As the academic year’s admission season, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has sounded the alarm by flagging close to 20 ‘fake’ universities nationwide.

A Word of Caution for Prospective Students

In a proactive move to guard students against enrolling in unauthorized institutions, the UGC urges students to cross-check with the official UGC website before committing to any university.

The University Grants Commission’s primary objective is to equip students with the knowledge of both recognized and fraudulent universities, ensuring they make informed decisions when seeking higher education.

Understanding What Qualifies as a University

The UGC, in its official notification, highlighted the criteria a university must meet. Notably, degrees can only be conferred by institutions established under a State, Central, or Provincial Act. Alternatively, institutions should be specifically empowered to bestow degrees according to the UGC Act of 1956.

Direct Communication to Unrecognized Entities

Adding gravity to the situation, the UGC has directly reached out to the vice chancellors of these flagged ‘fake universities’. Their letter explicitly states, “Your institution is not a ‘University’ as defined by Sections 2(f) and 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Yet, you continue to mislead students by issuing degrees, exploiting the ‘University’ title, and causing widespread deception.”

The UGC’s central concern revolves around innocent students falling prey to these unaccredited establishments. Emphasizing the severity of the issue, the commission clarified that degrees granted by these institutions would neither hold validity nor be recognized for higher studies or employment.

The concluding note from UGC demands a swift response. These universities have been given a 15-day window to provide a compliance report, asserting they have ceased awarding any degrees.
