TOEFL Scores Now Accepted at Canada Universities, Opening New Opportunities for International Students
Educational News: In an exciting development, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has authorized the use of TOEFL scores for the Student Direct Stream (SDS) route, a fast-track study permit processing program for international students. Until now, the IELTS test was the sole English-language testing option accepted for the SDS route.
Expanded Options for International Students
Educational Testing Service (ETS) announced that the TOEFL test will now be recognized by Canada’s post-secondary designated learning institutions participating in the SDS program.
This change expands the range of English proficiency tests accepted by Canadian universities and colleges, providing students with more options.
Benefits of the Change
Rohit Sharma, Senior Vice President of Global Higher Education and Workskills at ETS, expressed optimism about the addition of TOEFL to the SDS route.
He emphasized that this expansion would benefit the large number of students who utilize the SDS program each year. Institutions can now access a broader pool of applicants who can showcase their English language skills through the renowned TOEFL test.
Application Process and Timeline
Starting from August 10, 2023, students can include their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT scores as part of their SDS applications. The IRCC aims to process most SDS applications within 20 calendar days, provided that all eligibility requirements are met.
A Game-Changer for Indian Students
This milestone decision to accept TOEFL scores for the SDS route holds immense significance for Indian students aspiring to study in Canadian institutions.
With Indians constituting the largest student population in Canada, this change is expected to streamline the visa and admission processes, further solidifying Canada’s reputation as a preferred study-abroad destination.
Enhancements to TOEFL Test Experience
TOEFL, conducted by ETS along with the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), has recently undergone modifications to enhance the test experience.
These updates will take effect on July 26, 2023. TOEFL’s global recognition extends to more than 12,000 institutions across 160 countries, including popular destinations like the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and over 98 percent of universities in the United Kingdom.
News Summary
Canada’s decision to accept TOEFL scores for its higher learning institutions is a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and diversity in its educational environment. International students now have increased opportunities to pursue their academic aspirations in Canada, enriching their learning experiences and shaping their future careers.
