The primary aim of the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar is to honor the commendable and influential contributions made by stalwarts – scientists, technologists, and innovators, either as individuals or in teams, across various science and technology-led innovation fields.

Marked as one of the grandest accolades in its realm, the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar is open to all – be it those working in governmental or private sector organizations, or even individuals outside formal institutions.

Moreover, Non-resident Indians (NRIs) who have excelled in their respective fields benefiting Indian communities or society are also eligible.

Diverse Award Categories Under the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar Umbrella

Government of India Introduces Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar: Recognizing Excellence in Science, Technology, and Innovation. The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar will be bestowed across four primary categories:

Vigyan Ratna (VR): This award will recognize lifetime achievements & contributions made in any field of science and technology.

Vigyan Shri (VS): This award will recognize distinguished contributions in any field of science and technology.

Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB): This award will recognize & encourage young scientists up to the age of 45 years who made an exceptional contribution in any field of science and technology.

Vigyan Team (VT): This award to be given to a team comprising of three or more scientists/researchers/innovators who have made an exceptional contribution working in a team in any field of science and technology.

Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar Jury: Who Decides the Winners?

The Broad Spectrum of Domains and Transparent Selection

The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar envelopes a wide range of 13 domains such as Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Space Science, Technology & Innovation, among others. A balanced representation from each of these sectors, along with an emphasis on gender equality, will be a core principle.

The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar Committee (RVPC), led by the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, will judiciously evaluate all nominations.

When to apply for Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar?

Nomination and Award Announcement Timelines of Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar

The government will start accepting nominations for the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar from 14th January each year, culminating on 28th February (coinciding with National Science Day).

The National Science Award recipients will be declared on 11th May (National Technology Day), with the grand award ceremony slated for 23rd August (National Space Day).

All awardees will receive a medal and a certificate.
