Padma Awards 2024: Honoring Exceptional Achievements
The Padma Awards, one of India’s highest civilian distinctions, are announced annually on Republic Day’s eve. They are bestowed in three categories: Padma Vibhushan for extraordinary and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for exceptional service of a higher order, and Padma Shri for noteworthy service in any activity field. A key criterion for these awards is that the individual’s achievements must encompass an element of public service.
Eligibility for Padma Awards 2024
All individuals, irrespective of their race, profession, status, or gender, are eligible for these Awards. Serving government officials, excluding Doctors and Scientists, are not deemed suitable for these Awards.
The Awards aim to acknowledge works of distinction and are bestowed for distinguished and exceptional achievements/service in all fields of activities/disciplines. A sample list of the fields include:
- Art: Encompasses Music, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Cinema, Theatre, etc.
- Social Work: Involves social and charitable services, etc.
- Public Affairs: Covers work in Law, Public Life, Politics, etc.
- Science & Engineering: Comprises of Space Engineering, Nuclear Science, IT, etc.
- Trade & Industry: Encompasses banking, economic activities, management, etc.
- Medicine: Involves medical research and distinction in Allopathy, Ayurveda, etc.
- Literature & Education: Involves promotion of literacy, education reforms, teaching, etc.
- Civil Service: Involves distinction/excellence in administration etc.
- Sports: Encompasses Sports, Athletics, Mountaineering, promotion of sports, etc.
- Others: Covers fields not included above like Spirituality, Yoga, Wild Life conservation, etc.
Posthumous Cases
The Padma Award 2024 is not posthumously bestowed, with rare exceptions in highly deserving cases.
Eligibility for a Higher Category of Padma Awards 2024
A higher category of Padma Award can be conferred only if at least five years have passed since the earlier Padma Award. The Awards Committee can make an exception in rare and most exceptional cases.
The Decorations
Recipients receive a Sanad (Certificate) and a Medallion, a small replica of the main medal, with no monetary grant attached to these Awards. The Award does not function as a title and should not be used as a prefix or suffix to the recipient’s name.
Number of Padma Awardees
The total number of Padma Awards given in a year (excluding posthumous cases and Foreigners/NRIs/OCIs) is 120.
Who can nominate for the Padma Awards 2024?
The nomination process is open to the public, even allowing self-nominations. Nominations/Recommendations are solicited online from 1st May to 15th September every year.
Selection Process of Padma Awards
All nominations for the Padma Awards 2024 are presented before the Padma Awards Committee, constituted by the Prime Minister each year. No Award is bestowed without the recommendation of the Awards Committee. The recommendations of the Committee are submitted to the Prime Minister and the President of India for approval. The names are announced on the eve of Republic Day every year.
Ceremony Details of Padma Award 2024
The Awards are conferred by the President of India, typically in the month of March/April every year. The awardees are presented with a Sanad (Certificate) signed by the President and a medallion. The names of the awardees are published in the Gazette of India on the day of the presentation ceremony.
WHO DECIDES THE AWARDEE
All nominations received for Padma Awards are placed before the Padma Awards Committee, which is constituted by the Prime Minister every year.
The Padma Awards Committee is headed by the Cabinet Secretary and includes Home Secretary, Secretary to the President and four to six eminent persons as members. The recommendations of the committee are submitted to the Prime Minister and the President of India for approval.
