The eagerly awaited National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings for 2023 was released on Monday, June 5, 2023, during a virtual conference.

The Minister of State for Education and External Affairs, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, made the announcement, providing much-awaited clarity to students, educators, and institutions alike.

This year’s ranking saw the participation of approximately 8686 institutions, marking the 8th edition of the NIRF. This marks a staggering 150% increase in participation since the inauguration of the NIRF in 2015, highlighting the growing importance and influence of these rankings in shaping India’s academic landscape.

NIRF 2023 Ranking Criteria: A Comprehensive Assessment

The NIRF 2023 evaluates institutions based on a broad spectrum of parameters including teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcome, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.

This holistic approach ensures that the institutions are appraised on a multitude of facets, fostering an environment of all-round excellence.

NIRF 2023 Additions: Embracing Diversity in Disciplines

Notably, the Ministry of Education (MoE) introduced a new category to the NIRF 2023 Rankings this year – “Agriculture and Allied Sectors”, adding to the existing categories encompassing colleges, universities, overall ranking, management, pharmacy, engineering, medical, law, architecture, and dentistry colleges.

Moreover, the Architecture discipline has been rechristened to “Architecture and Planning”, reflecting the evolving nuances of academic disciplines.

IIT Madras: Crowned Champion Again

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras) once again emerged as the premier institution under the overall category, also clinching the top position among all engineering colleges in the country.

The top ten list is populated with other prestigious institutions including IISc Bangalore, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, AIIMS Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
