The Theme of National Science Day 2023
Rashtriya Vigyan Diwas: National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated every year on February 28 to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’. The Government of India designated 28 February as National Science Day (NSD) in 1986.
On this day Sir C.V. Raman announced the discovery of the ‘Raman effect’, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930. On this occasion, theme-based science communication activities are organized throughout the country.
DST acts as a nodal agency to support, promote and coordinate the celebration of National Science Day across the country.
Significance of National Science Day
NSD is celebrated with the aim of spreading the message about the importance of science and improving the daily life of common people. Apart from this, many other purposes are also taken care of in its celebration.
National Science Day is celebrated in schools, colleges, universities and other institutions across India. All activities, efforts and achievements in the field of science are displayed on the occasion of National Science Day. Through this, citizens of India who are interested in science are to be promoted by providing opportunities to them.
Sir C.V. Respect for Raman’s achievements
The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) requested the Central Government to designate 28 February as National Science Day (NSD) in 1986.
It is not only to honor Sir C.V. Raman’s achievements but also to thank other scientists for their achievements in the scientific field.

After the NSD, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication announced the creation of the National Science Popularization Awards, which recognized individuals for their contributions to science and communication.
