Ministry of Education notifies the Four Year ITEP, a dual-major holistic bachelor’s degree offering B.A. B.Ed./ B. Sc. B. Ed. and B.Com. B.Ed. which is one of the major mandates of the National Education Policy 2020 related to Teacher Education.As per the NEP, 2020, teacher engagement from the year 2030 onwards will be only through ITEP. It will be offered in pilot mode initially in about 50 selected multidisciplinary institutions across the country.

National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) under Ministry of Education has devised the curriculum of this course in such a way that it enables a student-teacher to get a degree in education as well as a specialised discipline such as history, mathematics, science, arts, economics, or commerce. ITEP will not only impart cutting-edge pedagogy, but will also establish a foundation in early childhood care and education (ECCE), foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN), inclusive education, and an understanding of India and its values/ethos/art/traditions, among others.

The prospective teachers passing out of ITEP in a multidisciplinary environment, grounded in Indian values and traditions and inculcating the needs of 21st century global standards will be helpful in shaping the future.

The Year ITEP will be available for all students who choose teaching as a profession after secondary, by choice. This integrated course will benefit students since they will save one year by finishing it in four years rather than the customary five years required by the present B.Ed. plan. The commencement of Four Year ITEP will be from the academic session 2022-23. Admission for the same will be carried out by the National Testing Agency (NTA) through the National Common Entrance Test (NCET). This course will be offered by multidisciplinary institutions and will become as the minimal degree qualification for school teachers.

The Four Year ITEP is a milestone achievement in fulfilling one of the major mandates of National Education Policy 2020. The course will contribute substantially to the revitalization of the whole teacher education sector. The prospective teachers passing out of this course through a multi-disciplinary environment, grounded in Indian values and traditions will be instilled with the needs of 21st century on global standards, and hence will be largely helpful in shaping the future of New India.

Key Highlights of the 4 Year integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP)

4 Year ITEP has been prepared in compliance with para 15.5 of NEP 2020, with the introduction of this course, it is expected that those students desirous of taking up teaching as a profession, by choice, will be undertaking this course.

  1. 4 year duration after Grade 12 of school system there by saving 1 year as against the normal duration of 5 Years in the existing B.Ed.
  2. A dual major degree of B.A,B.Ed Conferred on completion.
  3. Shall be piloted in selected multidisciplinary institutions.
  4. ITEP will be piloted from the academic session 2022-23.
  5. Students can apply for ITEP after Secondary School. Admission will be done through the National Common Entrance Test (NCET) conducted by NTA.
  6. By 2030 ITEP will be offered by multidisciplinary institutions and will be the minimal degree qualification for school teachers.
  7. Candidates who successfully complete this programme will be eligible to teach at different stages of the school education system in the country according to a design of 5+3+3+4 pattern as recommended in NEP 2020.
  8. ITEP will not only include the teaching of cutting edge pedagogy but also provide a grounding in early childhood care and education (ECCE), foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN), subject specialised content, toy pedagogy, inclusive education, knowledge of india and its values/ ethos/ art/ traditions etc.

The 4 Year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (#ITEP) will be open to all students who choose teaching as a profession after secondary, by choice.

What is Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP)

Integrated Teacher Education Program is a four year teaching course. This will happen in 8 semesters. In which field best experience, teaching practice and internship are also included. In some cases, the maximum time period for completing the program can be extended up to six years. Students who will not be able to succeed in any semester can pass it for 6 years after admission in this course. Initially, the program will be offered only in Science and Arts stream.

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has announced Integrated Teacher Education Program or ITEP course to enhance the teacher education system in the country. program which is for class 12 pass students. The course will be of four years. Enrolled under this program, students must complete it within eight semesters or in other case can complete the program within a maximum of 6 years.

Candidates who want to pursue this ITEP course those with minimum 50 percentile marks in class 12 exam are eligible to apply.

Admission will be on merit basis. As per the policy of the University or State Government or Union Territory Administration, there may also be an entrance test for admission to this ITEP course.

As of now, NCTE has not yet decided the overall institutes for the course. The institutes who wish to offer the syllabus for the first academic year 2019-2023 of the ITEP course can go through the eligibility criteria set by the council.

The ITEP program is a four-year program consisting of eight semesters, including field-based experience, teaching practice, and internship. The program includes professional studies involving mathematics and the sciences, social sciences and humanities including general studies and approaches in education, other core education curricula, curricula and teaching of school subjects, and practical related to the tasks and functions of the school teacher.

ITEP course will start from next academic year. The council has invited applications from all the institutes who wish to include this program in their curriculum next year, can apply.
