Kargil Vijay Diwas 1999 India-Pakistan War (Kargil Vijay Diwas)
Remembering the Heroes: The 1999 Kargil Conflict and its Significance
Introduction: Unfolding of the Kargil War: Emerging victorious from the intense strife of the Kargil War in 1999, India stands tall in tribute, remembering the immense sacrifices of its brave Armed Forces.
Kargil Vijay Diwas, commemorated annually, marks the triumphant end to “Operation Vijay” — a battle between India and Pakistan in the rugged terrains of Kargil (now Ladakh) in the northern part of Jammu and Kashmir.
After three gruelling months of relentless combat in the stark Kargil mountains, the Indian army declared victory, proudly hoisting the tricolour flag.
Post the India-Pakistan War of 1971, direct warfare was rare between the two nations. Yet, tensions escalated as both strove to gain control over the Siachen Glacier, leading to military conflict in the 1990s.
The situation further spiralled following atomic tests by both countries in 1998. A fleeting moment of peace was glimpsed with the signing of the Lahore Declaration in February 1999, but it was not to last.
Conflict Instigation: Pakistan’s Move
In a bold, unanticipated move, the Pakistani military endeavoured to sever the link between Ladakh and Kashmir, encroaching upon the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC). Their secondary objective was to compel the Indian army to withdraw from the Siachen Glacier.
Responding promptly, the Indian government mobilized approximately 200,000 Indian troops in the region, initiating “Operation Vijay”.
The Course of the Conflict
Early in the conflict, the Pakistan Army enjoyed the advantage of higher ground, easily targeting their Indian counterparts. They managed to shoot down two Indian planes, and another crashed. However, as the conflict continued, the Indian army strategically seized other Pakistani positions and took control of the mountains.

The Kargil War was pivotal in India’s history, proving India’s resilience against a militarized superpower like Pakistan. This conflict underscored the potency of India’s military capabilities, dispelling underestimations by other nations.
