About the START 2024 Event.

ISRO has an active space science program that explores various areas, including Planetary science, Astronomy, Heliophysics, Atmospheric science, and Microgravity research. They’re keen on involving academia more, to develop human resources and expand the user base of space exploration data.

As part of this effort, the Science Programme Office at ISRO HQ, along with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO, Dehradun, launched the online training program “Space Science and Technology Awareness Training (START)” in 2023. It’s aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students of science and technology.

The START 2024 program will run from April to May 2024. ISRO is seeking expressions of interest from educational institutes/universities/colleges in India offering UG/PG courses in physical sciences and technology to host the program.

What is the Objectives of START 2024 Program?

The primary goal of the ISRO Start training program is to inspire young individuals to pursue careers in space science and technology. The training modules will cover introductory-level topics across different aspects of space science and technology. Additionally, there will be sessions dedicated to discussing the Indian space exploration program and research prospects.

Date and Duration of online “START” Training

The online training program is scheduled to take place from April to May 2024. It is open to post-graduate students and final year undergraduate students of physical sciences (such as Physics and Chemistry) and technology (including Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Radiophysics, Optics & Opto-electronics, Instrumentation, and related subjects) enrolled in educational institutes/universities/colleges within India.

Certificate to Participants: Important criteria

To qualify for a participation certificate, participants must maintain a minimum attendance of 70% during the live online sessions. Those who meet this criterion are eligible to appear for the online examination.

To earn a merit certificate, participants must achieve a score of 50% or higher in the examination. Successful candidates meeting this requirement will receive a merit certificate.

Requirements from the Host Institute:

Selection of Candidates: Host institutes are responsible for selecting eligible candidates based on their aptitude and academic performance. Selected students must be currently enrolled in the institute. The host institute should provide ISRO/DoS with a list of selected students in the format specified by ISRO.

Lecture Hall/Auditorium Facility: The host institute must have a lecture hall or auditorium equipped with internet connectivity and projection facilities. Lectures will be streamed online through a suitable video conferencing platform. ISRO/DoS will share the link of the online training program with the institutes.

Eligibility of Candidates

Candidates eligible for the training program include post-graduate students and final-year undergraduate students majoring in physical sciences (such as Physics and Chemistry) and technology disciplines (including Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Radiophysics, Optics & Opto-electronics, Instrumentation, and related fields).

These students must be enrolled in educational institutes/universities/colleges within India.

How to apply for START 2024?

Here’s how educational institutions, universities, and colleges in India can apply for the START program:

Registration on ISRO E-CLASS Platform:

The START program will be conducted through the ISRO E-CLASS platform at https://eclass.iirs.gov.in.

Institutions must register their institute on the website.

Along with registration, an attachment of the relevant nomination letter (in the prescribed format – Annexure-1) from the Head of the Institute is required. This letter should identify a senior faculty member as the coordinator of the ISRO START program.

Submission of Details by Coordinator:

The appointed coordinator must provide details of the facilities available at the institute to host the ISRO START program.

Online Registration Deadline:

The last date for online registration of Expression of Interest (EOI) through https://jigyasa.iirs.gov.in/START by institutes/colleges/universities is 2nd April 2024.

Evaluation and Approval by ISRO:

  • ISRO will evaluate all the registered institutes based on the details submitted.
  • Approved institutes will be designated as ISRO START nodal centers.

Login Credentials:

  • Approved nodal centers will receive their login credentials for the ISRO E-CLASS Coordinator Management System (CMS).
  • It’s essential for institutions to adhere to the deadline and submit all required documents accurately for consideration by ISRO.

Here’s how students studying in colleges, universities, and institutes can register for the START program:

Check Nodal Center Registration:

Eligible students interested in registering for the START program through a nodal center should ensure that their host institute is registered/selected as one of the nodal centers.

Student Registration Period:

Student registration for the START program opens on 8th April and closes on 12th April 2024.

Application Process:

Once registration opens, students from nodal centers can apply online for the START program.

During registration, students must select their host institute as the nodal center.

Approval Process:

The coordinator of the nodal center will review all applications submitted under their institute and approve eligible students. Approved students will receive their login credentials for the ISRO E-CLASS Learning Management System (LMS).

Live Classes and Attendance:

  • The coordinator will conduct live classes at the institute, and approved students will join the sessions as a group.
  • However, participants can also join the live sessions individually using their login credentials on the ISRO E-CLASS platform.
  • At the end of each session, the coordinator will submit the attendance of each participant through the E-CLASS CMS.
  • Participants achieving a minimum of 70% attendance in live sessions will be eligible for the online examination.

Online Examination:

  1. The online examination will be conducted through the ISRO E-CLASS LMS at a scheduled date and time.
  2. The examination will be supervised closely by the START coordinator.
  3. Successful participants will receive a merit certificate from ISRO.

Recognition and Certificates:

Top rankers of the program will receive special appreciation and recognition from ISRO. Other participants will be awarded participation certificates.
