Essay on Guru Nanak Dev Ji – Essay for Students in English

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the first of the Ten Sikh Gurus whose birth anniversary is celebrated as ‘Gurpurab’ which is regarded as the most auspicious day for Sikhs all over the world. This holy saint was born when evil was prevailing at its peak in the world that required a savior. After Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth, the darkness of ignorance was dispelled and replaced with the light of knowledge. He dispelled the darkness and lit up the world.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Birth and His Childhood

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on 15th April 1469 at Talwandi Raibhoye in District Sheikhupura which is in Pakistan presently. This pious place is known as Nankana Sahib. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s father was Mehta Kaliyan Ji more popularly known as Mehta Kalu while his mother was Tripta; his sister was Bebe Nanki. His Birth Anniversary is observed every year on Full Moon Day in Kartik (November) as per the Sikh Calendar. Many learned people believe that Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on 20 October 1469.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Education

At the tender age of seven Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was sent to a learned man Pandha for his education and learning. His teacher was highly impressed with his sound knowledge of ethics and spirituality. As a student Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was obedient and spiritual. Besides learning Persian and Sanskrit skilfully Guru Ji also acquired the knowledge of Mathematics.

An incident of Sachha Sauda

After the Divine Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji had completed his studies his father gave him twenty rupees and asking him to make a wise investment in establishing a good business sent him to the city.On the way Guru ji came across two saints(Sadhus) who were famished as they had not eaten a crumb for a long period of time. Thereafter, he returned home which angered his father. According to Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji it was the wisest investment (Sachha Sauda) to feed the two hunger stricken saints. His divinity was beyond the comprehension of the ordinary.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Service

Guru Ji’s mind and heart were far away from worldly and material pleasures so he could not work for materialistic gains. He was therefore sent to Sultanpur to his sister, Bibi Nanki’s house where he was appointed at Nawab Daulat Khan’s warehouse. Here too Guru Ji helped the poor and

the needy by generously distributing the grains to them free of cost. Somehow the Nawab learned about it all and he immediately went to look up the accounts but found everything in perfect order. After this incident occurred Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji withdrew from this job.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Enlightenment

In Sultanpur Lodhi, Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji used to meditate on the bank f the river Bein. One day He went to bathe in the same river but for three days He remained underwater. When He emerged from the river after three days He had attained Enlightenment. Thereafter, He went on a world tour with a mission to serve humanity.

Guru Ji’s father was highly perturbed to see his son (Guru Ji) least interested in worldly or materialistic gains so he arranged for Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s wedlock with Bibi Sulakhani but all His attention was focused on Spirituality and the Divine. When Guru Ji meditated His cattle would graze in somebody’s fields and destroy their crops and consequently, Guru Ji’s father would get complaints from people which disturbed him(his father a great deal. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was blessed with two sons – Shree Chand and Lakshmi Das.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Travels or Divine Journeys or His Four Udasis

Guru Ji’s long travels in East, West, North, and South are known as Four Udasis (which include holy text based on his experiences); he visited local religious centers and interacted with priests, Seers, pirs, and other scholars ( the holy people associated with different religions in different regions of India) and professed His newfound path.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Enlightened wrongdoers

Guru Ji enlightened some wrongdoers bringing them on the path of righteousness thereby reforming them; these were Malik Bhago, Sajjan Thug, and many others. Kirat Karo or Work Hard and Honestly, Naam Japo or Always Remember God, and Wannd Chhako or Share With The Needy was the Holy Sermon of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Ji also reformed society by guiding and leading people to the path of righteousness asking them to give up their wrong ways of living.

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a great poet and musician too; He composed nineteen ‘Ragas’ his holy Gurbani which has been incorporated in Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji the Holy Scripture and Last Guru among the ten Sikh Gurus. His followers cherish Gurus ‘Bani’ to date.

Shri Guru Nanak Devi Ji passes on His Glorious Lineage to Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji

Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji declared Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji ( who was originally Bhai Lehna Ji but was given this new name of Angad Dev Ji by Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji) His descendant passing on this glorious lineage to him and Himself He merged with the Supreme Light in the year 1539. This is how the worldly Journey of the Great Guru came to a close but His name lives on as He is the Immortal Being.
