The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued new guidelines to promote inter-generational bonding in schools. The advisory follows recommendations from the National Council of Senior Citizens and guidance from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Under the guidelines, CBSE encourages schools to involve grandparents in selected school activities. These include national and commemorative events such as Independence Day, Bal Diwas, and the International Day of Older Persons.
CBSE said the participation of senior citizens helps strengthen emotional connections between generations. The board added that such interactions promote mutual understanding, respect, and value-based learning among students.
CBSE has also advised schools to organise joint activities such as walkathons involving students and their grandparents. Schools aim to address loneliness and social isolation among senior citizens through these programmes.
The circular directs schools to conduct all activities in an inclusive and dignified manner. Where required, schools should inform the relevant authorities in advance and maintain records of the activities undertaken.
The guidelines take effect immediately and apply to all CBSE-affiliated schools. CBSE said the initiative supports broader efforts to improve the well-being and social inclusion of senior citizens through community participation.
