This is a completely online course, primarily aimed at teachers dealing with Science at the middle stage (Classes 6-8) in schools. The purpose of this course is to help in the professional development of a large number of pre-service and in-service teachers to become reflective and competent practitioners.
The course consists of multimedia-based interactive learning materials. It provides in-depth yet flexible learning opportunities for anyone interested in the teaching-learning of science at the middle stage. Each module starts from the basics and attempts to develop the learner’s understanding up to a significant conceptual depth.
Goals of the NCERT Diploma in Teaching of Science at the Middle Stage:
Professional Development of Teachers: Help teachers become reflective and competent practitioners, equipping them to continually improve their teaching methods.
Filling Gaps in Content Knowledge: Provide teachers with content knowledge that goes beyond the elementary level syllabus, enabling them to teach with greater depth and confidence.
Pedagogical Content Knowledge: Enable teachers to improve lesson plans by integrating pedagogical content knowledge and using alternative resources and multimedia tools to explain science concepts effectively.
Encouraging Peer Discussion and Critical Thinking: Facilitate peer discussions, promote exploration of phenomena, and cultivate questioning and critical thinking skills among students.
Exploring Natural and Social Phenomena: Teach educators to use real-world natural and social phenomena as examples when explaining scientific concepts, making learning relatable and practical.
Understanding Knowledge Construction: Provide insights into how children construct knowledge, the importance of questions in the learning process, and how these can be harnessed to enhance understanding.
Teacher as a Facilitator: Demonstrate the teacher’s role as a facilitator who provokes inquiry, guides collective analysis, and encourages students to arrive at their conclusions through exploration.
Initiating Learning Activities: Equip teachers with methods to initiate explorations, conduct individual and group learning activities, and analyze experiences in a way that allows students to form their own conclusions, rather than having the teacher impose them.
