CBSE Board has decided to extend the provision to allow students who studied Mathematics Standard in Class 10th to opt Mathematics in Class 11th for the academic year 2023-24.

A One-Time Measure During the COVID-19 Pandemic

As a one-time measure, CBSE relaxed the rule during the COVID-19 pandemic, taking into account the challenges and disruptions faced by students.

The circular clarifies that students who have studied Mathematics Standard (041) in Class 10 can now choose Mathematics (041) in Class 11 for the upcoming academic year.

However, students who have previously opted for Mathematics Basic (241) in Class 10 will be limited to selecting Applied Mathematics in Class 11.

CBSE Mentioned in Circular

Now, after detailed deliberations, the following has been decided by the Board for the session 2023-2024:-

As per circular no. Acad-03/2019 dated 10.01.2019, students of Class-X who have studied Mathematics Standard (041) can offer Mathematics (041) in Class-XI. In case, the students who offered Mathematics Basic (241) in Class-X are allowed to offer only Applied Mathematics in Class-XI.

This rule has again been relaxed by the CBSE for the session 2023-2024 only, thus, students who offered Mathematics Basic (241) are also allowed to offer Mathematics (041) in Class-XI.

Before permitting Mathematics (041) in Class-XI to such students, the Head of the Institution should satisfy that the students are having the aptitude and ability to pursue Mathematics (041) in Class-XI.

This exemption is being given as a special measure to facilitate the present batch i.e. 2023-2024 of students of Class-XI.

Facilitating the Present Batch of Class 11 Students

The exemption to offer Mathematics (041) in Class 11 to students who chose Mathematics Basic (241) in Class 10 has been introduced as a special measure to facilitate the current batch of Class 11 students.

Earlier Introduction to Two-Level Mathematics

In 2019, CBSE introduced a two-level mathematics system for the All India Secondary School Examination, starting with the academic session and ending in March 2020.

According to the circular dated January 10, 2019 (Acad-03/2019), students who had studied Mathematics Standard (041) in Class 10 were eligible to choose Mathematics (041) in Class 11.

Conversely, students who had opted for Mathematics Basic (241) in Class 10 were limited to selecting only Applied Mathematics in Class 11.

Relaxation for the Academic Year 2023-24

In a recent circular, CBSE has relaxed the rule once again, specifically for the academic year 2023-24. This means that students who had chosen Mathematics Basic (241) in Class 10 can now opt for Mathematics (041) in Class 11.

It is important to note that this exemption applies only to the mentioned academic session.

Assessment of Aptitude and Ability by Heads of Institutions

CBSE has advised the Heads of Institutions to assess the aptitude and ability of students before granting permission to pursue Mathematics in Class 11.

This ensures that students have the necessary skills and capabilities to excel in their mathematics education.
