Linking RuPay Credit Cards with Google Pay: A Leap Forward in Digital Payments
In a significant development, Google Pay, in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has announced that it now supports RuPay credit cards for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions. This announcement makes Google Pay the latest platform to allow UPI payments via credit cards, a feature previously restricted to debit cards.
Google Pay’s Foray into Credit Card UPI Payments
The integration of RuPay credit cards into Google Pay’s payment service now allows users to make UPI payments using their credit cards. This facility is currently available for RuPay credit cardholders from eight banks: Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, HDFC Bank, Indian Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Punjab National Bank, and Union Bank of India.
“This feature will give Google Pay users more flexibility and choice in making payments, and will drive greater adoption of digital payments in the country,” stated Sharath Bulusu, Director of Product Management from Google.
Seamless Integration and Increased Convenience
The integration is aimed at delivering a seamless user experience by combining the convenience of UPI transactions with the benefits of RuPay Credit Cards.
This initiative also aligns with the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) decision in June 2022 to allow the linking of RuPay credit cards to the UPI platform.
Nalin Bansal, Chief of Relationship Management and Key Initiatives, Corporate Business from NPCI, spoke of this move as a step towards a seamless user experience that combines UPI convenience with RuPay credit card benefits.
How to Activate This Feature?
To use this feature, Google Pay users must link their RuPay credit card with the app. This process is as simple as setting up a debit card.
Here are the steps to activate the RuPay Credit Card feature on Google Pay:
Step 1: Open the Google Pay app on your smartphone.
Step 2: Navigate to the app’s settings.
Step 3: Look for the ‘Payment and Add Account’ section.
Step 4: Select the ‘RuPay Credit Card’ option.
Step 5: Enter the last six digits of your RuPay Credit Card, along with the expiry date, and your PIN number.
Step 6: An OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to your registered mobile number.
Step 7: Enter the OTP for verification.
After successful OTP verification, you can start making UPI transactions via your RuPay Credit Card on Google Pay.
A Boost to UPI Transactions
This announcement comes amidst the rising popularity of UPI payments in India, with the NPCI reporting an impressive 8.7 billion UPI transactions in March. The year 2022 saw approximately 74 billion transactions amounting to Rs 125.94 trillion conducted using UPI, according to NPCI data. Google Pay’s latest move is likely to provide further impetus to this growing digital payment trend.
Plans are underway to extend this facility to other banks in the near future, broadening the spectrum of users who can benefit from this feature. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in India’s digital payments landscape.
